Bio

Gabriel Rodríguez

Bassist, Compose, Educator

An experienced musician whose interpretive and creative strength stems from his deep understanding of the main elements of jazz and his Afro-Caribbean roots. This talented artist was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 15, 1974. His need for continuous studies and the exploration of rhythms and styles led him to independent studies. From the age of fourteen he dedicated long hours of studies in such a mystical approach that today he is capable of performing a modern interpretation of the music he plays where the classical is masterfully fused with aggressive harmonies and other techniques not addressed by many of the contemporary bassists. His unique style, a balanced medley of musicality, knowledge, feelings and an incredible understanding of his Latin nature has made him one of the most sought after bassists on the music scene.
The versatility of his performance has led him to perform with the best Latin jazz players in the world. Notable among this group are Charlie Sepúlveda, Dave Valentín, Giovanni Hidalgo, Jerry González, Miguel Zenón, Paoli Mejías, Fidel Morales, William Cepeda, Ángel (Papo) Vázquez, Néstor Torres, Luis “Perico” Ortíz, Batacumbele and many others.
His credentials also include numerous appearances as a sideman for Vic Juris, Pete Rodríguez, Marcos Pignataro, Holograma, Causa Común, Gary Keller, Alex Acuña, Barry Greene, San Juan Collective, Luke Guillespie, James Williams and many others.
His expertise includes performance on both kinds of instrument, acoustic and electric bass.
Gabriel has a master's degree in music education from the P.R. Conservatory of Music, offers master classes and educational workshops on jazz and improvisation. He has written educational advice columns and has recently just published his “Handbook for the Development of Harmony and Technique”.
He currently works as a professor in the faculty of the Jazz and Caribbean Music Program of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music since 2005 where he teaches both electric and acoustic bass.
